Variable month lengths, leap years and time of birth
The month-by-month calendar method
Simply dividing a number of days by 365 only gives an approximate age. Our algorithm works like a civil registry: it first counts the completed years, then the full months while respecting the real length of each month (28, 29, 30 or 31 days), and finally the remaining days. The result is therefore exact whatever the interval.
People born on February 29
Leap years (divisible by 4, except centuries not divisible by 400) add a February 29. For someone born on that day, the birthday is set to February 28 in common years so the completed-years counter never falls behind. Every leap year crossed is included in the total number of days lived.

FAQ: exact age & birthday calculation
How does the calculator handle leap years?
The calculation relies on the real Gregorian calendar: every February 29 crossed is counted in the total days lived, and the number of days of each month is respected when counting full months. For people born on February 29, the birthday is set to February 28 in non-leap years.
How can I calculate my age at a future or past date?
Select the "Custom date" mode in the Reference date field, then enter the desired date (for example the deadline of an exam, an application or a retirement date). Your exact age, statistics and birthday countdown are then recalculated for that specific date.
Why does the time of birth refine the result?
Without a time of birth, the tool assumes you were born at midnight. By entering the exact time, the number of hours, minutes and seconds lived becomes precise, and the countdown to your next birthday ends at the exact moment of your birth.
Is the total number of hours lived reliable?
Yes, it is calculated from the exact gap between both dates in local time. Only daylight saving time changes (a one-off ± 1 hour) or a birth in another time zone can create a one-hour difference. Heartbeats and breaths remain fun average estimates.
